500px – Best of 2012

I keep saying I love 500px and I at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I’m saying it again. They selected a bunch of pictures in various categories, as the best of 2012: 500px – Best of 2012 There is a lot of great work there, and this is very inspiring to me. I’ve said it in the past, but looking at other people’s work will help your own photography! I flag some of those pictures as my favorites, […]

Back Button Focusing

Hi guys, As I told you some time ago, I have been experimenting with the ‘back button focusing’ functionality for the past couple of months. Before I tell you about my experience, let’s talk about the functionality itself. Well, this link is the best explanation I’ve found, so I will not reinvent the wheel. Just take a look: http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=2286 As for my personal experience, it took me a little while to get used to it, and I didn’t see the […]

Lost Letter in Lightroom? Listen!

As I went to start my beloved Adobe Lightroom, I instantly didn’t feel the love… Lightroom asked me where my catalog was… Panicked, I looked under my desk to ensure that there wasn’t a pile of ash in place of my dedicated hard drive… Nope… Unplugged?? Nope… Power outage?!!! Hey, I’m not that stupid!!’ What had happened was simply that my drive had now moved from P: to Q:. Lightroom was confused, of course, but so was I at that […]

Photography Books Made Easy with Blurb

A fact of photography is that pictures are nothing until they are printed! It’s great to have photographs online, in social networks, blogs or specialized websites, but these images fully reveal themselves only when they are on paper. Plus, with the multitude of screens and devices around, you have no control over what your pictures are going to look like when your viewers display them! Have you tried editing or looking at pictures on a laptop screen? Not great… Once […]

1×2 – The Book

Just in time for Christmas, I received the long-awaited yearbook from the world-acclaimed (at least, by me!) 1x.com website. The book, called 1×2, gathered photographs from 210 photographers who contributed to the 1x.com community over the years. The photos in the book cover all the categories present on the website, and demonstrates the tremendous creativity of this website’s members. It is an honor for me to be part of the book and hope to make it for its next edition! […]

Negative Clarity

Hi folks, I was working on a picture yesterday, and I used the ‘Clarity’ slider in Lightroom. The way I use this slider is to usually increase the clarity to about 40 (I actually created a preset to increase the clarity to 40, the vibrance to 40 and the tone curve to ‘strong contrast’. I now tend to use this preset on all my pictures as a starting point). But for this picture (see original and final below), I used a […]

Irving Penn Dies at 92

An iconic figure of contemporary photography passed away yesterday, Wednesday, October 7th, 2009, in Manhattan, New York. His work includes portraits, fashion and still life. His minimalistic style created a departure from conventional photography at the beginning of his career, but is now recognized as his trademark. His diverse and extensive work is widely respected by his peers. His latest publication is a compilation of tradespeople portraits taken over the years.
