Washington, Done, Gone

That’s it, we left the country! As of tonight, we are in Cannon Beach, Oregon.

Yes, I know… What happened with Washington?! Well, we went through it, fairly quickly. We took the I-5 past Seattle, into Tacoma, and then took the WA-107 at Olympia onto US-101 to Cannon Beach. Nothing really major to report in the great state of Washington. We’ll venture into the interior on the way back.

The road becomes a lot more scenic (and quiet) when you get off I-5. That’s when we started feeling like we were on vacation!

The main point of interest of today’s drive happened as we crossed the state line from Washington to Oregon, via the Astoria-Megler bridge. The Astoria-Megler Bridge is a continuous truss bridge that spans the mouth of the Columbia River between Astoria, Oregon and Point Ellice near Megler, Washington. It is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America (6,545 m in total). I know some of you are going to ask “What the hell is a truss bridge?!!”. Good question! Go to Wikipedia…

Nonetheless, this is a a very impressive crossing of the Columbia River!!

Past Astoria, and onto some windy roads, we finally made it to our destination for the day, Cannon Beach, Oregon.

We missed the sunset by about 8 minutes, but I’m pretty confident there will be another one tomorrow.

We found the main (and only) street in Cannon Beach, on which the Sand Trap Inn is located, our hotel for the next 2 nights. After checking in, we headed for the restaurant recommended by our hostess, Bill’s Tavern.

In the end, we are where we wanted to be, on vacation, in front of a drink, not a laptop computer…

That’s it for today. After a good night rest, tomorrow will be a relaxing day, exploring the quaint down and its memorable beach (including Haystack Rock). I will even take my camera out, which I didn’t today (thank you iPhone state-of-the-art camera!).

Good night!
